How does it work?

ORTHOsoft™ Navitrack® TotalKnee™ uses new imaging technology that does not require expensive, radiation-intensive CT or MRI scans. The ORTHOsoft™ Navitrack® TotalKnee™ is a Computer-Assisted Orthopedic Surgery application that tracks the main surgical instruments, the knee structure and the knee implants relative to the patient’s body. The application displays the image on a workstation, enabling the surgeon to perform a more accurate implant placement. During surgery ORTHOsoft™ Navitrack® TotalKnee™ presents information and images that provide data so that it is easier and more precise to determine leg movement. With computer animations, it offers detailed views of the patient’s knee, while showing key tasks to be performed.

Trackers, attached to the surgeon’s instruments with small pins, are placed on the femur and tibia. During surgery, the surgeon identifies several landmarks on the femur, tibia and ankles allowing the computer to identify the best alignment for the implant to restore your healthy physiology. In real-time, the navigation system then tracks the surgeon’s instruments. With regards to alignment, this shows the actual implant position on the screen. Once the surgeon has proceeded with the resurfacing of your joint to accommodate the implant, the navigation system helps him or her verify the accuracy of his preparation before inserting the final implant.

The ORTHOsoft™ Navitrack® TotalKnee™ provides data that validates every step of the surgery and helps to confirm that the new knee has been properly positioned.  It shows various views of the implant components and the leg’s range of motion to maximize movement after the surgery.

In a recent ORTHOsoft™ study of 50 patients, the ORTHOsoft™ Navitrack TotalKnee™ reduced alignment errors. Only 1 percent of the cases had component alignment errors greater than 3 degrees compared to 11 percent with conventional surgery. A misalignment of only few degrees can result in premature wear, which in turn can reduce the life of a knee implant by as much as 50 percent. Computer-Assisted Surgery significantly reduces the chance for misalignment and subsequent wear on the implant.

To date, the ORTHOsoft™ Navitrack® TotalKnee™ System has been used in over 25,000 total knee replacements worldwide.
